How to Defend Against Arsenal (Season 23/24)?

By Shady Elabody September 21, 2024

Arsenal scored 16 goals this season from attacking corners' situation in the Premier League, which represents 18.2% from the total goals they scored in general.

So what makes them unstoppable and how to defend against them ?

**Starting position **

They positioned themselves at the edge of the 6-yard box on the far post side.

This starting position makes it difficult for the zonal players to track both their movements and the ball simultaneously. Additionally, it drags the man markers towards the far post, thereby vacating the area they aim to attack. Furthermore, The runners gather enough speed to leap above the zonal players

**The targeted Area **

They aim for the near post and inside the 6-yard box, so the attacker only needs a slight touch to direct the ball with its power toward the goal. Additionally, they are too close to the goal, so the goalkeeper has no time to react to the header

How to defend ?

The answer comes from Arsenal themselves, when they defended against Brighton, that attempted the same attacking strategy against Arsenal during their first corner.

Arsenal adopted their typical setup, with 4 zonal players deployed. Two players were tasked with guarding the near post, Gabbi positioned for the middle area, and Saliba stationed in front of the far post

The man markers moves with the same steps as the attackers to let them in front of their eyes

And when the attacker wants to accelerate for an attack, the man marker stuck to him to delay his run

While Gabriel “ the zonal player” tried to delay Dunk who moved from the 6 yards box

Then Gabriel shifted to defend the space in front of the near post to clear the ball away
